Genre defying Toronto artist Abel Tesfaye a.k.a. “The Weeknd” has certainly made his mark on the R&B, hip hop, and electro scenes since surfacing rather mysteriously in 2011 and releasing a trilogy of mixtapes that won a lot of accolades from fellow musicians and critics.
He has since collaborated with several well known artists, including Drake, Wiz Kalifah, Sia, Kavinsky, and most recently, Rick Ross on his new album “Mastermind.” His signature voice is akin to Ellie Goulding’s, haunting, melancholy, and smooth, with impressive range. And much like Goulding, his songs are often remixed in really refreshing ways that just work well.
Here are his 10 of his best collaborations and remixes:
1.) “Elastic Heart” with Sia and Diplo (from “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” Soundtrack.
2.) “In Vein” with Rick Ross (from Ross’ “Mastermind”)
3.) “Odd Look” with Kavinsky
4.) “Remember You” with Wiz Kalifah (from Kalifah’s “O.N.I.F.C.”)
5.) “Sexodus” with M.I.A. (from M.I.A.’s “Matangi”)
6.) “Crew Love” with Drake (from Drake’s “Take Care”)
7.) “One of These Nights” with Juicy J (on J’s “Stay Trippy”)
8.) “Wanderlust” (Snakehips remix)
This might be the most “happy” and bouncy he has ever sounded. Definitely worth checking out!
9.) “The Party” (Chi Duly remix)
Similarly bouncy and upbeat. Chi Duly remixed the entire “House of Balloons” mixtape and called it “Balloons of Haus.” The whole thing is available on soundcloud.
10.) And finally…he “remixed” Beyonce’s “Drunk in Love” with his own vocals and lyrics and it’s an amazing reinvisioning of her song.
