“Atomos VI”- A Winged Victory For The Sullen

This latest composition by A Winged Victory For The Sullen, the collaborative duo of L.A. composer Dustin O’Halloran and Stars Of The Lid founder Adam Wiltzie, is a dark, yet gentle cinematic soundscape that’s at once haunting, captivating, and soothing. It presents the listener with a beautiful balance of dynamics that heighten the drama and the storyline that plays out within the instrumentation.

Douglas Dare- “Whelm”

Douglas Dare is kind of like James Blake’s more classically trained, piano based musical cousin. Both artists have a rather minimal, somber approach to their music and a heartbreakingly beautiful quality and depth to their vocal delivery. Dare certainly laces some of his work with that experimental, avant garde electronic sound that Blake is known for, but overall his songs are marked by more of a lush simplicity and flow. Listening to “Whelm” right after Blake’s latest album, “Overgrown,” felt almost like the difference between reading a classic work of fiction or poetry and a something more postmodern.

It’s challenging to describe the beauty and nuances of Dare’s music. Better to just listen to it. It’s pretty breathtaking…
